Definition: Plastics are materials consisting of polymers and additives. Polymers are macromolecules of natural or petrochemical origin.

Bonten

With the help of a suitable processing technology, polymers have to be suppelemented with addititves in order to create a workable material containing the desired property profile. The additives are usually mixed into the melt using a double-screw extruder. Usually, then the polymer and additives, now called plastic, are brought into a granular form making it easier to be processed.

Such plastic development is only reasonable if the resulting properties are tailored to the specific material applications. Thus, the characterization of the material properties, the so-called material testing and analysis, is inseparably linked with constructive material development. Material testing and analysis begins with the determination of the mechanical properties, continues with the identification of the thermal and chemical characteristics and goes through to the consideration of the morphological structure of a material.
